Ball Corporation Will Close Its Beverage Packaging End-Making Plant in Bristol

Ball Corporation will close its beverage packaging end-making plant in Bristol, Virginia, next year.

Opened in 1971, the Bristol plant is one of the oldest North American beverage packaging units of the company. It makes can ends in a variety of sizes and provides employment to 230 people.

The company estimates an expenditure of $19m related with the closure, primarily towards funding employee severance and benefits.

"Bristol employees will be provided benefits in accordance with the effects bargaining process, and will be able to apply for open positions within Ball," it said in a statement.

The facility's production will be adjusted into other Ball units in the US.

Ball Corporation North American metal beverage packaging president Daniel W. Fisher said: "This action will better align our manufacturing footprint to meet the needs of our customers as we actively manage our overall cost structure.

"Closing a plant is a difficult decision. We compete against plastic, glass and metal packaging in a highly competitive market, and we will continue to maximize value in our existing operations through optimizing our network, as well as expanding into new and growing products, capabilities and markets to meet the needs of our customers."

Ball Corporation supplies metal packaging services to the beverage, food and household sectors.

Earlier this year, the company has purchased two metal end and closure facilities in Canton, Ohio, from Sonoco. It is currently in the process of acquiring European can maker Rexam for £4bn.
