More Governments Around The Globe Are Expected to Set Standards for LED Lighting

More governments around the globe are expected to set compulsory standards for LED lighting devices in 2012, which in turn will help reduce vicious price competition in the LED lighting segment. Taiwan's Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection has been setting many LED lighting standards in recent years. In end of 2010, the bureau announced three indoor lighting standards for LED T8 straight tube lighting, LED projection lights and light steel frame lights. China has been developing its domestic LED market but due to huge differences in weather conditions across the entire country, the developments have been in the hands of the provincial governments. The industry anticipates an expansion of LED indoor lighting incentive program promoted by the 12th Five-Year Plan to help the market in 2012. The European Union (EU) already has standards for LED lighting products. For the LED lightings that hope to enter the EU, the products have to obtain Conformite Europeenne (CE) mark. The EU also announced that by 2013, the LED lighting products need to fit the safety standards of electromagnetic radiation to the human body. The US Environmental Protection Agency announced in October 2011 the standards for solid-state lighting fixtures and light source products to be launched in the market. Industry sources noted that by April 2012, all lighting firms in North America will procure LED lighting products that pass the LM-80 lumen maintenance testing first. For Taiwan-based firms that have not yet go through such testing, it would pose as a difficulty for the firms' products to enter the North America market. Industry sources added that as more countries set up LED lighting standards, products that pass tests will become the mainstream. This is also an effective way to reduce the percentage of ill-quality products. Source: www.digitimes.com
