Cartaguard Khi Additive Is Based on C3 Technology and Delivers Better Grease Resistance

Swiss speciality chemicals company Clariant has introduced a new perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)-free grease resistant additive, 'Cartaguard KHI' for safer food papers and board.

The additive makes paper grease resistant without releasing impurities into the packaging and supports the trend toward eco-friendly solutions for ready-to-eat foods such as burgers, pizza, pastries and confectionary.

To create a protective surface that protects hands and clothing from grease, the Cartaguard KHI penetrates into the paper or board and attaches to each fiber. It helps manufacturers to produce grease resistant packaging to replace traditional plastics and paper-plastic combinations.

Cartaguard KHI additive is based on C3 technology and delivers better grease resistance demanded by the market. It is also said to meet the stringent requirements for food service packaging.

The molecular structure of the impregnating agent comprises long-side chains that repel oil and fat, ensuring better oil and grease barrier performance. It also brings production advantages to the paper mill.

According to the company, the additive generates hardly any foam during paper production and does not affect either the adhesive or printing properties of the paper and is easy to process.

The German Federal Institute for Risk Evaluation (BfR) and the US American regulatory agency FDA have approved Cartaguard KHI for food contact applications.
