About 3,800 workers employed in apparel factories, especially in KwaZulu-Natal and Newcastle regions in South Africa, have returned to work as their employers have agreed to raise wages by R40 a week.
About a week ago,the workers went on strike after the garment unit owners did not implement the R45 a week wage increase, agreed at a meeting between representatives of the workers union and the clothing factory owners.
According to the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers'Union(SACTWU),the workers in non-compliant apparel factories were paid between R250 and R400 a week, much lower than the minimum wage of R534 a week prescribed legally.
SACTWU said the strike by workers has been suspended as employers have agreed to implement the wage increase.
