At the Optical Fiber Communication/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC 2013) in Anaheim, CA, USA (19-21 March) in the booth of optical solution provider Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd (SEI), Anritsu Company (the US subsidiary of Japanese communications test & measurement equipment provider Anritsu Corp) was part of a demonstration of what is claimed to be the world's first 25G EDR (enhanced data rate) technology. Anritsu’s MP1800A BERT (bit-error-rate tester) was used to showcase key component technology used in an EDR active optical cable (AOC).
“Sumitomo Electric is committed to developing the products necessary to meet the requirements of reducing the weight, density, and power consumption over traditional copper alternatives,” says Manabu Yoshimura, general manager of Technology and Marketing Strategy Department at Sumitomo Electric Device Innovations (SEDI).
Anritsu says that the MP1800A was selected partly because it supports wideband bit rates from 0.1G to 32.1G for versatile signal integrity analysis applications. It features a built-in pulse pattern generator (PPG) to support output of high-quality, high-amplitude signals, and an error detector (ED) with high input sensitivity for signal analysis, such as bathtub jitter and eye-diagram measurements. A jitter modulation source is also integrated into the MP1800A for generating various jitters, such as SJ/RJ/BUJ/SSC, and supporting jitter tolerance tests.
