Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has asked farmers to speed up the process of cotton harvesting, so it gets completed in time and without loss.
Cotton harvesting, which began in late August, is slated to continue till next month.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, Turkmenistan aims to reap 1.109 million tons of cotton from its total cultivated area of 550,000 hectares this year, slightly above its last year’s output of 1.1 million tons.
Traditionally, Turkmenistan exports cotton to Russia, South Korea, Iran, Singapore, China, Turkey, Indonesia, Ukraine, the UK and Baltic countries.
Turkmenistan, which positions itself amongst the world’s seven leading cotton producing nations, now retains around 80 percent of the cotton it produces for domestic use, which is far more than a meagre three percent share that it retained while it was a part of the Soviet Union.
In Turkmenistan, cotton is mainly grown in five regions – Akhal, Lebap, Balkan, Mariy and Dashoghuz.
