The MHL Consortium on August 20, 2013 unveiled the new MHL 3.0 standard, pushing nine new features. Among the nine features, only seven are real enhancements, while the remaining two are just reaffirmation of the standard's existing technologies.

The seven new enhanced features of the MHL 3.0 standard are: support for resolutions up to 2160p30; simultaneous high-speed data transmissions during video transmission; improved Remote Control Protocol (RCP) with support for peripherals such as touch panel, keyboard and mouse; power charging up to 10W; support for HDCP 2.2 content protection; enhanced 7.1 surround sound with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD and support for simultaneous multiple displays.

Compared to its major competitor Mobility DisplayPort (MyDP), some of MHL 3.0's new features share similar functionalities such as support for input peripherals, while some have surpassed those of MyDP such as support for Ultra HD formats and up to 10W power charging.

Some features, due to differences in ideas and business strategies, are going in completely different directions. Compared to MHL, MyDP is taking a passive attitude about providing support for HDCP, TrueHD and DTS-HD.

Digitimes Research believes MyDP will see pressure from the increased technology specifications of the MHL 3.0 standard and will put focus on adding Ultra HD support and 10W power charging support.
