Breweries in Scotland grew by more than 10% over the past one year, primarily due to rise in demand for local food and drink apart from change in customer preference to buy small artisan brands.

Eight new breweries debuted in the past year in Scotland taking the total number in the country to 76.

Scottish brewers Innis & Gunn and Brewdog have emerged as global players over the past few years.

A total of 187 new breweries were opened in the UK during the period, majority of which are craft or micro breweries.

As per the latest edition of The Good Beer Guide 2014, released by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), there are 1,147 beer producing businesses in the UK.

The Good Beer Guide 2014 editor Roger Protz said, "There has been phenomenal growth in the number of breweries producing real ale across the UK, which is fantastic news for drinkers as this creates more choice and more opportunity to buy locally produced beers."

Craft or micro breweries produce less than 50,000 litres of beer per year.
