Timber Mill Workers in South Australia's South East Have Made a Vote of No Confidence

Timber mill workers in South Australia's South East have made a vote of no confidence in the Forestry SA board at a large rally in Mount Gambier. About 700 Carter Holt Harvey employees took strike action this morning. Workers are protesting to put pressure on Forestry SA and the State Government to reduce log prices. The company considers current prices unsustainable, and says it could result in job losses. Mill worker Peter Lamb was a part of the strike action. Mr Lamb says he's worried about his family's future. "I've got a couple of young kids. If I lose my job where do you go from there? "There's no other places around that employ saw doctors at this present time and I'd have to move away or virtually start again in some other field. " Forestry SA chairman Ian Kowalick says the Carter Holt Harvey demands for log price, are way below the market price for timber. "That level would mean growing trees is not unsustainable. "The government has offered them some short term assistance, but they wanted long term contracts which would make growing trees in the green triangle unprofitable. " Source: abc.net.au
