MRPL Commenced Commercial PP Post-Completion of its Phase III

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) has commenced commercial production of polypropylene (PP) post-completion of its Phase III refinery expansion and upgradation project.

In a filing to the BSE, MRPL said it successfully commenced commercial PP production from its PP plant, as part of its Phase III project, on June 18, 2015. The plant has capacity to produce 4,40,000 TPA polypropylene.

“The Feedstock for the polypropylene plant, polymer grade propylene, is being produced from upstream Petrochemical Fluidised Catalytic Cracking Unit (PFCCU). The technology provider for the plant is Novolen of Germany, and the plant has been engineered and constructed by Engineers India Limited, a premium Central Public Sector Undertaking,” MRPL said in its filing.

“Commercial production of polypropylene, which is a value-added product, marks MRPL’s foray into petrochemicals. This will be a new revenue stream for MRPL and will also deliver value to the stakeholders,” said H Kumar, managing director of MRPL.

The PP plant, set up at an estimated cost of Rs 1,803 crore in Mangaluru, was commissioned in April this year. It is the only plant in South India that manufactures polypropylene. It is backed by four warehouses with capacity for 21 days cover and a fully automated pellet bagging system.
