EFSA Has Said That It Is Safe to Use Genetically Modified(GM)Oilseed Rape in Foods

The European Food Safety Authority(EFSA)has said that it is safe to use genetically modified(GM)oilseed rape in foods.

Bayer CropBioscience developed oilseed rape, which is resistant to glufosinate-ammonium-containing herbicides, reported Foodnavigator.com.

The EFSA Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms analysed the safety of using this herbicide-tolerant oilseed rape in foods and concluded that they are not going to have an adverse impact on human health.

The panel assessed the composition of the GM variety against a non-GM variety, and found that other than proteins, there were no major differences between the two.

The safety of the new proteins and the whole food was further evaluated with respect to toxicity, allergenicity and nutritional wholesomeness, and found it to be safe enough for consumption.

This safety approval comes only days after a study of Monsanto's glyphosate-tolerant NK603 maize showed that rodents fed with the maize were likely to develop tumours than those fed with non-GM maize.
