Trade Resources Industry Views Lextar, Cree and Leadray Energy Partner up on LED Streetlight Projects

Lextar, Cree and Leadray Energy Partner up on LED Streetlight Projects

Taiwanese LED manufacturer Lextar announced recently it formed a partnership with Leadray Energy and Cree in LED streetlight R&D.

The new streetlights integrates Lextar and Cree LED light source technology, and Leadray Energy’s luminaire structure and thermal dissipation designs. The companies will be working together on the blueprint of a new generation streetlight product. This is a great leap forward for Lextar, which has been investing in streetlight market sector since 2005 (if its acquisition of LightHouse Technology is taken into account). The international partnership which introduces advanced global lighting technology and manufactured in Taiwan model will be able to improve LED streetlight product quality in the future.

The three LED companies are collaborating on streetlight designs to meet the Taiwanese government’s “mercury streetlight sunset plan”, which involves the phase out of high pressure mercury lamps. An estimated 69 million high pressure mercury streetlights will be replaced with LED lights. The companies will be cooperating on three technology aspects, and integrate Cree’s streetlight R&D experience, Lextar’s LED chips and vertically integrated manufacturing advantages to develop LED streetlights with luminous efficacies reaching 200 lm/W. The three LED manufacturers will also be applying Leadray Energy’s LED streetlight structural designs, and Lextar’s optical processing capacities.

The three companies aim to make next generation streetlights with high efficacy and wide beam angles that can meet new LED streetlight regulations, and improve streetlight efficacy by nearly 25%.

Lextar President Mong Lin views this joint effort as a mile stone to Lextar’s LED streetlight development. By working with international manufacturers on lighting technologies, it can propel Taiwan’s LED streetlight developments and help manufacturers enter international outdoor lighting markets.

Leadray Energy has also been a prominent player in Taiwan’s LED streetlight market. The company installed its first LED streetlight in Taiwan eight years ago, and its products are now being used in 370 towns by more than 200 government agencies and companies.

Lextar and Leadray Energy have a close partnership in the LED streetlight sector. After Lextar introduced Leadray’s thermal dissipation technology into one of its streetlight models last year, the product passed Taiwan’s CNS15233 certification.

Lextar entered the LED streetlight market after it acquired LightHouse Technology in 2010. Prior to the merger, LightHouse was involved in streetlight engineering and construction projects since 2005 in Southeast Asia, China, Taiwan and many other regional markets.
