Peru's Gamarra Traders Will Shut Down Trading to Protest Against Chinese Imports

Apparel traders from Peru’s Gamarra emporium have announced a business strike and will shut down trading on September 5, 2013, as a protest against the facilities provided by the Government on imports of Chinese clothing.
 
Diogenes Alva, President of Coordination of Gamarra Entrepreneurs, said the Peruvian Government is not taking steps to stop the entry of Chinese clothing which is affecting the local traders.
 
The Gamarra entrepreneurs will protest to defend the domestic textile industry and Peruvian laborers, he added.
 
Mr. Alva also urged National Institute of Defense of Competition and Intellectual Property Protection (INDECOPI) to quickly conclude its investigation on the imports of Chinese clothing and impose anti-dumping measures on them.
 
The low prices of clothes from the Asian country have resulted into an unfair competition for the local apparel traders in Peru, he added.
 
INDECOPI started an investigation in 2012 on the imports of clothing from China at allegedly lower prices.
 
The ongoing research indicates that domestic apparel manufacturers in Peru were adversely affected by imports of clothing from China, and INDECOPI has suggested imposition of antidumping measures on Chinese apparel.
