Thin Film Electronics Provides NFC Technology to GSK's OTC Brand Flonase

Thin Film Electronics has provided its near field communication (NFC) technology to British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline’s (GSK) over-the-counter (OTC) brand Flonase.

GSK has deployed Thinfilm’s SpeedTap tags to create interactive smart Flonase shelves for better communication with consumers at time of purchase decision-making.

GSK has launched interactive smart Flonase shelves in retail stores across Canada to provide detailed information about the new product and guide them in their purchasing decision.

Thinfilm’s SpeedTap tags are integrated into shelving to help consumers to secure product information through the tap of an NFC-enabled smartphone.

GSK is also using Thinfilm’s CNECT software platform to manage Flonase consumers, in addition to SpeedTap tags.

The cloud-based platform incorporates with the NFC hardware, allowing GSK to manage tags remotely and deliver custom messaging and content.

It will also help to view real-time consumer tapping activity and develop consumer insights through built-in analytics functionality

Flonas is the GSK’s prescription to over-the-counter intranasal corticosteroid spray for relief of nasal and eye-related allergy symptoms. It will also help to manage sinus pain and pressure.

GSK R&D respiratory packaging managing director Sriman Banerjee said: “At GSK, we focus on helping people do more, feel better, and live longer. And we do that, in large part, by delivering highly effective products to the market.

Thinfilm CEO Davor Sutija said: “Bringing Thinfilm’s NFC solutions to a valued product like Flonase® is a milestone in the industry, and we look forward to helping GSK drive the brand’s value by connecting directly with consumers at the time of purchase decision-making.”
