Retailer Asda has selected new extended shelf-life film of Ultimate Packaging to pack its Extra Special Cornish Crystal Potatoes.
According to Ultimate Packaging, Viridiflex film draws moisture away from fresh produce, and creates an environment that can help to prevent decay.
The film is said to possess oxygen barrier qualities that can be manipulated using the company's Adapt MAP laser technology, modifying the film to create packaging that can optimize the shelf-life of fresh produce.
Adapt MAP laser perforation patterns have been used to adapt Viridiflex potato film, in a bid to increase gas transmission through the film, while managing oxygen levels to reduce the Cornish Crystal Potatoes 'greening' risk.
Viridiflex has been designed by Ultimate in collaboration with Innovia Films and customers involved in the harvest and packing of fresh produce to supply retailers across Britain.
The transparent film can be formed into bags or used as lidding film, and serves as a solution to extend the shelf-life of potatoes, parsnips, sprouts and soft fruits.
Asda Produce Category technical manager Jon Wynn said, "ASDA customers have benefited from a significant increase in product life and end of life product quality, highlighted by a 92% year on year reduction in complaints in the first five weeks of the Extra Special Cornish Crystal Potato season."
