Trade Resources Industry Views Los Angeles City Council and an Alliance of Plastic Bag Makers Are at Loggerheads

Los Angeles City Council and an Alliance of Plastic Bag Makers Are at Loggerheads

Los Angeles City Council and an alliance of plastic bag makers are at loggerheads over banning one-time use of plastic bags in the city.

The American Progressive Bag Alliance also is lobbying city lawmakers to try to head off the plans to outlaw use of the bags following a City Council vote on the bag ban, reported dailynews.com

The plan calls for a six-month orientation to phase out the plastic bags followed by a total ban. At first stores will be allowed to charge 10% paper bag, money they can retain to cover their costs, and all single-use bags will be banned in a couple of years.

Progressive Bag Alliance is designing a special message for the city of Los Angeles and fostering dialogue on different fronts saying the bans would not really do much.

The alliance represents 30,800 plastic manufacturing jobs that could be affected by the ban, including about 1,900 in the Los Angeles area.

Councilman Paul Koretz said there are comparatively fewer jobs to be lost with this.

"And in fact there is a group working with vets who are making the more permanent bags and we think that will more than make up the job loss." added Koertz.

Several firms in the reusable bag manufacturing business like Command Packaging have concerns with the city of L.A. proposal, and according to the firm, nothing of plastic should be banned as it can be recycled.
