TEA Wants to Export Oriented Tirupur Industry

Tea Seeks Special Status for Tirupur Knitwear IndustryDr. A. Sakthivel, President, Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) has sent a requisition letter to the Hon'ble Chief Minister to provide a special status to export oriented Tirupur industry immediately and instruct to give power supply continuously, without interruption so as to protect export units and the people employed with these units.

The letter states - "We appreciate the necessary steps being taken by Tamil Nadu Government to address the power cut issue and at this juncture, we wish to note that Tirupur being an export hub is facing a lot of issues due to power cut and exporters are finding it difficult to plan their production and meet their delivery schedule, leave alone the quality.  The concern is that the delay in supplying the garments to the export market will straightaway give a bad reputation to exporters which will result into losing of future orders.

"More importantly, Tirupur knitwear exporting units have been already facing stiff competition in the global market and in such situation, if the units plan to go for captive power generation using diesel as a fuel, then their cost of production will increase due to significant increase in diesel prices and ultimately, trigger for further erosion of our competitiveness.

"Tirupur industry is providing employment to more than 350 thousand people directly and 200 thousand people indirectly, mostly migrant workers from southern districts of Tamil Nadu and also from other States.  It may be noted that the power cut is also the cause of concern for idleness of these workers and at last, their livelihood will get affected.

"We request the Hon'ble Chief Minister to provide a special status to export oriented Tirupur industry immediately and instruct to give power supply continuously, without interruption so as to protect export units and the people employed with these units."
