For its 90th year celebration, the National Christmas Tree will be illuminated with over 450 strands of LED Christmas lights as well as 120 star-shaped LED ornaments. By using LEDs the tree saves about using 16,000 watts of energy.

To finish off the tree, the heirloom topper will be outfitted with commercial grade LED lighting and there will be 57 smaller trees also lit with LEDs to represent each state and U.S. Territory. As well as it being the 90th year of lighting the National Tree, it is also the 50th anniversary of the invention of the LED light.
