Eastern European Producers Thus No Longer Appear to Be Offering Their Products

The pressure on prices for finger-jointed window scantlings made from softwood has tended to subside a little since the end of July. This came after cheap offers from Eastern European scantling producers had put the squeeze on prices up until that point. A number of Eastern European suppliers have now sought and sometimes instituted mark-ups of .10-0.20 per running metre for finger-jointed spruce and pine scantlings. Insiders expect the situation to ease when transactions for the post-holiday season are struck. German scantling producers and importers reported that significant supply surplus on the part of Eastern European suppliers was palpable. However, they noted that strong pressure on prices had increasingly put the squeeze on suppliers’ earnings.
