The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) said the recycling processes are not unsafe as long as the proportion of rPET from non-food consumer applications does not exceed 5% and are operated under well-defined conditions.
This was mentioned in the new scientific opinions published by EFSA on the use of recycled PET (rPET) for use in food-contact applications.
Of the ten recycling processes assessed, none of them cause safety concerns, claimed the authority.
The submissions are the first of a series by EFSA on recycled plastic materials for food use, which on completion would feed into wider EC decisions on the regulation of recycled plastic and food packaging.
