Consumption in the LCD TV market has been less than expected causing firms to adjust capacities accordingly to promote products that can save costs and increase utilization rates such as direct-lit LED TVs. Taiwan-based brands such as BenQ and Sampo have been introducing 32-inch direct-lit LED TVs with competitive prices.
Direct-lit LED TVs are relatively low-cost to produce and contain energy-saving features due to LED backlight units (BLUs) that have been favored by distributors. Samsung Electronics have been promoting direct-lit LED TVs in different sizes ranging from 20-40 inch products. The industry believes Samsung will increase shipments of direct-lit LED TVs to the amount comparable to edge-lit products.
LG Electronics have been introducing direct-lit LED TVs in the sizes of 47- and 55-inches and plans to introduce the 72-inch model in Taiwan's market.
BenQ indicated that the firm will introduce 39- and 50-inch direct-lit LED TVs according to plan. The latest model of 42-inch has been priced less than NT$20,000 (US$668).
