Sugar Bowl Bakery has introduced a new compostable packaging for its organic product line at the International-Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association show being held in Houston, Texas, US.
The new compostable packaging has been designed for its organic line and to reduce carbon footprint by 72%.
Sugar Bowl Bakery sales director Pete Thomsen said: "We are proud to be among the first to embrace compostable packaging in our bakery department, and we believe this aligns with an organic consumer's intent to reduce planetary impact with responsibly sourced products.
"Ultimately, this provides our retail partners with a strong statement to stand with us in reducing the carbon footprint in the industry.
"Many consumers embrace the idea of organic products at this point, so a product that first and foremost great tasting and then in addition reduces the greenhouse gases associated with the packaging by 72% is a product I think consumers will be excited to try, to love and tell friends and family about."
The packaging has been developed as part of the company's effort to have a positive impact on the environment.
The packaging carton features a recycled paperboard which is produced using the waste paper from local retailers within a 150 mile radius of the paperboard plant.
The paperboard plant is located 30 miles south of Sugar Bowl Bakery's Hayward, California, US.
Sugar Bowl Bakery also verified each component compostable for the package including the wrapper around the cakes and cookies.
The firm plans to launch the compostable packaging with the bakery's Organic Brownie Bites and Organic Madeleines.
Separately, Sugar Bowl Bakery also installed a solar energy system to meet 65% of the facility's electricity along needs. It also installed multiple electric vehicle charging stations.
