The UK Food Standards Agency(FSA)has advised people not to consume products containing DMAA(1,3-dimethylamylamine)-an ingredient used primarily in sports supplements,as it may lead to adverse health reactions.
Products containing DMAA are sold in the UK as pre-workout sports supplements and as fat burning food supplements.DMAA is a stimulant,for which a safe level for human consumption has not been determined.
The Agency noted that a number of people across have experienced adverse reactions after consuming products containing DMAA.The ingredient has been linked with high blood pressure,nausea,cerebral hemorrhage,stroke and death.
Products containing DMAA have been withdrawn in various countries across the European Union and around the world.
DMAA may be mentioned on the product packaging as:1,3-dimethylamylamine,DMAA,geranium extract,geranamine,methylhexanamine,and 4-methylhexane-2-amine.
The FSA said that it is working closely with enforcement authorities to ensure that food supplements containing DMAA are not available for sale.Consumers have been advised not to buy online any food supplements or products containing DMAA.
In addition,the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency(MHRA)has asked an independent advisory panel to advise whether a certain product containing DMAA should be classed as an unlicensed medicine and therefore subject to medicine controls.
This advice may also have implications for the status of other DMAA-containing supplements.
