Ball to Halt Production at Beverage Packaging Plant in North Carolina, US

Sustainable packaging solutions provider Ball is planning to cease production at its beverage packaging plant in Reidsville, North Carolina, US in mid-2017.

Commissioned in 1978, the Reidsville plant was acquired by Ball in 1998 as part of the acquisition of Reynolds Metals Company.

Employing approximately 150 people, the facility manufactures beverage cans in a variety of sizes.

Upon ceasing of operations at the plant, Reidsville employees will be eligible to apply for job openings within Ball and will be provided benefits and outplacement services, the company said.

Ball plans to serve the plant's customers from its other facilities in the US.

Ball Corporation senior vice president and global beverage packaging COO Daniel Fisher said: "This action will better align our manufacturing footprint to meet the changing needs of our customers and the market, as we actively manage our overall plant system after the addition of seven North American Rexam plants upon close of the acquisition earlier this year.

"While closing a plant is always difficult, balancing our supply with demand in the highly competitive beverage packaging industry will better position the company for the long-term."

Ball said it expects approximately $18m in after-tax charge, primarily for employee severance, pensions and other benefits, asset impairments, and facility shut down and disposal costs.

In September, Ball agreed to sell its specialty tin manufacturing facility in Baltimore, Maryland, to Independent Can Company in a deal worth $25m.

The Baltimore plant manufactures a diverse range of specialty and custom tinplate cans for a range of applications from cosmetics to promotional items.
