Retail sales for June were down 2 percent in units but up 1 percent in dollars, coming in at $391 million, according to Leisure Trends Group's RetailTrak IBD sales summary. Year-to-date sales are still down 5 percent and off by $88 million compared with the same period last year, despite two straight months of dollar gains.
Bicycle sales were up 3 percent from June 2012, but road bike sales continued to slide in units and dollars, off 9 percent and 4 percent, respectively.
Mountain bike sales were also down in units, but rose 8 percent in dollars, with 29er sales growing 30 percent in units and 27 percent in dollars compared with this time last year. Sales of 26-inch-wheeled mountain bikes continued to fall, dropping 19 percent in units and 14 percent in dollars.
Apparel, shoe and helmet sales were off by 2 percent in units and 3 percent in dollars this June, as were accessories, which fell 6 percent in sales and 3 percent in dollars. Aftermarket part sales were up, however, gaining 4 percent in units and 2 percent in dollars over last year at this time.
