Lundbeck Has Introduced The First Approved Medication Reducing Alcohol Consumption

H. Lundbeck has introduced the first approved medication reducing alcohol consumption in alcohol dependent patients in Norway, Finland, Poland and the Baltic markets.

Additional launches in other European countries are expected to follow later in 2013 and 2014.

Lundbeck international markets and Europe senior vice president Ole Chrintz said, "This is an area with significant unmet medical needs, and we are excited about introducing an innovative treatment concept that provides a new and different option for patients who may otherwise not seek treatment."

Selincro demonstrated reduction of alcohol consumption by approximately 60% after six months treatment in clinical trials.

The common adverse noted in the studies include nausea, dizziness, insomnia and headache.

Selincro should be prescribed along with continuous psychosocial support focused on treatment adherence and the reduction of alcohol consumption, according to the company.
