Report: Foxconn Testing Wireless Charging for iPhone 8

Tags: Foxconn, iPhone 8

Despite the fact the iPhone 8 is almost a year away, the rumours have been stacking up lately, with suggestions of OLED tech and edge-to-edge screens doing the rounds.

The latest report, from Nikkei Asian Review, claims that Foxconn, one of the firms responsible for assembling iPhones, is testing wireless charging modules for the iPhone 8.

Citing 'an industry source familiar with the matter', the report states the wireless charging feature could appear on the next Apple handset, but it depends whether the company can produce enough satisfactory units.

The source told Nikkei: "Whether the feature can eventually make it into Apple's updated devices will depend on whether Foxconn can boost the yield rate to a satisfactory level later on."

The yield rate refers to the 'number of satisfactory units in the production of a batch of components', and if it's found to be too low, the wireless charging feature could be left out of the iPhone 8 according to the report.

It's also claimed the wireless tech could make it into some versions of the iPhone 8 and not others.

The iPhone 7 came with minimal design changes in comparison to the iPhone 6S

The latest rumour follows an earlier report from the same outlet which quotes Sharp President Tai Jeng-wu as saying: "The iPhone has been evolving and now it is switching from LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) to OLED panels."

Other recent rumours claim Apple will release 4.7-inch and 5-inch iPhone 8 models, alongside a premium 5.5-inch version of the handset which is said to be the OLED version of the phone.

It could very well be, if this is accurate, that the wireless charging tech comes with the premium 5.5-inch iPhone 8.

At this point, then, it's unclear just what Apple has in-store, but the company will be looking to shake things up with its next handset.

The iPhone 7, though it's proved to be a popular handset, introduced minimal design changes, and doesn't look like it will do much to alleviate Apple's revenue problems.

The firm announced a year-on-year fall in revenue for the first time since 2003 at the end of last quarter, which analysts have put down to an over-saturated smartphone market.

As such, we're expecting a lot from Apple when it comes to the iPhone 8, but at this early stage, it's advisable to take all reports and rumours with a pinch of salt.
