A New LED Display

Forget a “power saving” appliance, how would you like to own a piece of “electronics” that doesn’t require any power whatsoever. That’s the goal from a team of UC San Diego scientists who this week revealed a new LED display that’s powered not by electricity but instead through the power of bacteria. While the technology is far from becoming a staple in your home the breakthrough is still impressive. Engineers were basically able to engineer one type of fluorescent bacterium created from E. Coli to glow according to a biological clock. In 2010 the same group of researchers were able to get a whole colony to blink at the same time and now they say multiple colonies blinking in order to create a type of living LED. It should be noted that the larger LED screen is only the size of a paper clip, while the smaller LED is one-tenth that size. Although scientists promise that much bigger screens will arrive sometime in the future. While it doesn’t look like they will actually power your TV anytime soon scientists do believe the bacteria can help detect arsenic. The process would work by having the living bacteria flash much more quickly when the substance is found. Source: inquisitr.com
