Raising a mountain of funding doesn't prove a tech company is success-bound. But if you ask Jeff Fagnan at Atlas Venture, there's a closer correlation between the two today than even a few years ago.
"I think the current crop (of top-funded companies) is definitely stronger" than those of years past — many of which "just had really expensive operating businesses," he said.
"Today, companies that delineate themselves from the pack are usually the ones that have raised the most funding," Fagnan said.
See below for our findings for the 50 best-funded, privately held technology companies in Boston.
The figures refer to equity funding and are the companies' total amounts raised to date (i.e. as of Dec. 20, 2013)
All of the companies have their global headquarters in the Boston area, were founded after 2000 and fall into the categories of software, Internet, hardware or advanced materials (not included are biotech, health IT and medical devices)
The figures are based on company announcements, regulatory filings and our own reporting (not all companies were willing to confirm their funding total)
The list is part of this week's Boston Business Journal print cover story, headlined "They Might Be Giants" (check it out here if you're a print subscriber). The story looks at which Boston tech companies have the potential to grow large and stay independent over the long term — leading to the creation of local jobs and new startups along the way.
