BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor Revealed

The BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor has been revealed ahead of its official unveiling at tomorrow’s OutDoor trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

Previewing a future BMW 1 Series GT, and adding yet another compact SUV to the ever-growing segment, the BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor shares its plug-in hybrid powertrain with the Concept Active Tourer first seen at the 2012 Paris motor show.

Combining a transversely mounted turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery, the front-wheel drive Concept Active Tourer Outdoor has a combined output in excess of 140kW and an all-electric range of up to 30km.

BMW claims average fuel consumption of “approximately” 2.5 litres per 100km and CO2 emissions of less than 60 grams per kilometre. Both axles can recover energy for the battery, which is located underneath the boot floor.

With identical proportions to the previous concept car, the new Active Tourer Outdoor is 26mm longer, 68mm wider and 139mm taller than the current BMW 1 Series hatch, and is 20mm shorter between its 20-inch wheels.

Inside, it gets hard-wearing ‘easy-care’ materials, MoonWhite and MoonRock Grey leather and Alu Mesh MoonGrey trim. Compared with the original concept, the updated concept gets a load compartment covered in an ‘easy-to-clean’ studded plastic material featuring a two-bike carrier system. While the in-board bike carrier means bicycles are protected from the elements when in transit, bike saddles and front wheels must be detached before being secured in place.

A multi-function instrument display shows the operating status and energy flow of the hybrid system and alters depending on the driving mode selected – Comfort, Sport or Eco. It’s also joined by an eight-inch centre console-mounted touchscreen used to access a range of BMW ConnectedDrive services as well as the satellite navigation system.

Finished in an exclusive Gold Race Orange exterior paint finish, BMW hopes the Concept Active Tourer Outdoor will peak the interest of keen mountain bikers, climbers and hikers. A production version awaits…
