Total smartphone application processor (AP) shipments to the China market came to 92.1 million units in the second quarter of 2013, up 13.1% sequentially and 84.4% on year, buoyed mainly by robust growth in MediaTek's shipments to the region, according to Digitimes Research.
MediaTek shipped a total of 43 million smartphone APs to the China market in the second quarter, up 22.9% on quarter, said Digitimes Research. MediaTek enjoyed robust growth in shipments for WCDMA and TD-SCDMA models.
Qualcomm's smartphone AP shipments to China totaled 21.5 million units in the second quarter, rising by a relatively smaller margin of 7.5% sequentially, while Spreadtrum Communications' shipments grew 7.7% on quarter, Digitimes Research disclosed.
The top-3 suppliers - MediaTek, Qualcomm and Spreadtrum - contributed more than 90% of the overall smartphone AP shipments to China in the second quarter, Digitimes Research indicated.
MediaTek's shipments accounted for 46.7% of the total smartphone AP shipments to China in the second quarter, compared to 43% in the prior quarter, while Qualcomm saw its share slip to 23.3% from 24.6% in the first quarter, Digitimes Research observed. Spreadtrum also saw its shipment share decrease to 22.8% in the second quarter from 24% in the first.
