Transport for London Celebrates Metroland at Designjunction

Transport for London (TfL) celebrates 'Metroland' and its role in the suburban development of London's housing stock at this year’s designjunction, as part of this year's London Design Festival, with a funfair style booth designed by Loris&Livia and a giant Twitter machine created in association with TfL.

On show as part of designjunction will be Florian Dussopt’s Twitter Machine, created to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the iconic Johnston typeface designed by Edward Johnston for the Underground Group in 1916. The machine will stamp out twitter messages in Johnston type, featuring special #hashtags which take digital technology and reverts it back to printed paper.

TfL will launch a series of homeware products in collaboration with brands and designers including Made.com, Kirkby Design, Finnish design house Vallila and London based designers Loris&Livia. Products will include fabric by the metre, upholstery and soft furnishings, lighting, furniture and accessories including totes, cushions and table accessories.

Loris&Livia have designed the stand at designjunction which includes the Wonderland funfair installation showcasing new products and prizes for visitors. Other booths will show products by Made.com, Kirkby Design and Vallila all of which have been inspired by posters, artwork and fixtures & fittings made iconic by the capital's transportation system including lighting and furniture, upholstery and fabrics, cushions and giftware.

The collections for this year's show have all been designed to celebrate the birth of the early 20th century 'Metroland', when a new generation of London home-owners moved away from the cramped conditions of an overcrowded city to the green gardens and cleaner air opened up by its newly extended Metropolitan line. The creation of new housing offered Londoners new opportunities to create well though out homes - with expanded living spaces including separate kitchen and reception/dining room, attached bathrooms and several bedrooms.
