A cat is set to replace the classic iron token used in Monopoly.
Fans from 185 countries voted for the change on Facebook as part of the Monopoly "Save Your Token" campaign, which featured on the cover of ToyNews' February issue.
The cat received 31 per cent of the total vote, beating off competition including toy robot, guitar, helicopter, and diamond ring tokens. It will appear in Monopoly board games from mid to late to 2013.
Additionally, the Scottie dog was the clear winner out of the current Monopoly tokens that have been saved, after securing 29 per cent of votes.
The iron token picked up just eight per cent of votes, meaning it will no longer be included in future iterations of Monopoly. It was originally added to the classic board game in the 1930s.
Hasbro will issue a special Classic Monopoly Golden Token Edition game that will include gold-coloured versions of all eight classic tokens and the five new tokens. This will be available at major toy stockists nationwide and has an RRP of £16.99.
"We know that cat lovers around the world will be happy to welcome the new cat token into the Monopoly game," said Eric Nyman, senior vice president and global brand leader for Hasbro Gaming.
"While we’re a bit sad to see the iron go, the cat token is a fantastic choice by the fans and we have no doubt it will become just as iconic as the original tokens."
In the UK specifically, the toy robot received the most votes, while the current token with the least votes was the thimble, followed by the wheelbarrow. The third least popular token with the iron.
In Mexico and the US, the boot was the least popular classic token.
Fans who want to continue to play with the iron and the seven other classic tokens have a limited time to pick up the existing version of the game.
The Monopoly “Save Your Token” campaign ran from January 9th to February 5th.
