US carmaker Ford Motor is recalling about 485,000 of its Escapes and Maverick SUVs over sticking pedal issue that could cause crashes.

Ford's recall include nearly 423,634 vehicles in the US, about 35,000 in Canada, 19,000 in Mexico, 4,500 in Europe and 4,300 in other regions.

According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the SUVs manufactured from 2001 to 2004 and powered by 3-litre, V-6 engines with cruise control are affected by the recall.

The issue involves cruise control cable on the affected models, which could snag on the plastic cover above the engine when the pedal is completely depressed, which would cause gas pedals to stick and prevent the throttle from returning to the idle position.

Earlier Ford had also recalled about 11,500 new 2013 Escape SUVs powered by 1.6-litre EcoBoost engines over a fire risk issue related to fuel lines.
