Infinera Initiated The Deployment of The Infinera DTN-X Platform

Infinera Corp of Sunnyvale, CA, USA, a vertically integrated manufacturer of digital optical network systems incorporating its own indium phosphide-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and Moscow-based Rostelecom OJSC, the largest nationwide telecoms operator in Russia, have initiated the deployment of the Infinera DTN-X platform (based on 500Gb/s coherent super-channel technology) to extend the reach of Rostelecom’s transport IP/MPLS network.

With an Infinera Intelligent Transport Network, Rostelecom has the flexibility to offer a wide range of 10, 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) services. Infinera’s 500Gb/s super-channel technology provides high-speed service delivery and high scalability for the multi-terabit transport network. The Infinera Intelligent Transport Network, featuring the DTN-X with PIC technology, also allows Rostelecom to reduce operating costs by offering network automation capabilities, multi-layer convergence and high reliability.

Rostelecom serves more than 100 million subscribers in 80 regions throughout Russia, offering fixed and mobile telephony, broadband access, TV, and cloud solutions to consumers and businesses. “Rostelecom sees the need to respond to immense growth of traffic volumes in a quick and proactive manner,” says Ivan Zima, senior VP for network development.

“We are seeing ever increasing demand for our Intelligent Transport Network solution globally," says Infinera’s CEO Tom Fallon. "Our innovative 100G solution, uniquely delivering 500Gb/s super-channels, provides operators like Rostelecom a solution that delivers on scale, speed and flexibility.”

The Intelligent Transport Network architecture is based on the DTN-X platform, which uses the what is claimed to be industry’s only commercially available 500Gb/s coherent super-channel technology. The DTN-X enables service providers to scale to terabits, integrating DWDM optical transmission and 5Tb/s non-blocking OTN switching into a single platform. As an integrated solution, it is designed to utilize the network resources more efficiently compared to conventional WDM architectures. Intelligent software combined with this converged platform automates manual operations to lower operational costs and enable faster service delivery, claims Infinera. “Infinera is the fastest-growing supplier of WDM equipment in Europe as a result of the introduction of the DTN-X,” comments Andrew Schmitt, principal analyst, Optical at Infonetics Research.
