Galaxy S8 Could Get Qualcomm's Powerful New Snapdragon 835 Chip

Details about Qualcomm’s recently announced Snapdragon 835 chip have been leaked online, including information about what phones will feature the new processor.

Information on the Snapdragon 835 has been posted to China’s microblogging website-in-chief Weibo, and picked up by local news outlet Anzhuo. According to the leaked spec table, the Snapdragon 835 – model number MSM8998 – will feature a Kryo 200 CPU with eight cores, although the clock rate isn’t confirmed. It’s also set to feature the Adreno 540 GPU, apparently, as well as Qualcomm’s top-end Snapdragon X16 modem, which is capable of 1Gbps download speeds – pending your phone network’s cellular offering, of course.

It also reconfirms what we already knew about the chip, specifically that it’s built on Qualcomm’s highly efficient 10nm FinFET manufacturing process, which allows the chip to offer either 27% higher performance or 40% lower power consumption. At the time of the chip’s announcement, Jong Shik Yoon, who heads up Samsung’s chip-making business, said:

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to work closely with Qualcomm Technologies in producing the Snapdragon 835 using our 10nm FinFET technology. This collaboration is an important milestone for our foundry business as it signifies confidence in Samsung’s leading chip process technology."

So with that partnership in mind, it’s no surprise that the leaked table suggests that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone – recently confirmed by Samsung itself – will carry the new chip. What’s more, the leak says that Samsung will reveal the phone at Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress tradeshow in 2017. That’s long been expected, mind; Samsung is very likely to show off the phone on February 26, a day before MWC 2017 properly kicks off.

Unfortunately, we can’t actually verify any of the information contained in this leak, as is always the case with Weibo leaks. The Chinese microblogging site is a hotbed for highly accurate leaks, but it also regularly turns out rubbish. As such, take this leak – and any future Galaxy S8 leaks – with due caution.
