FrieslandCampina DMV has installed an energy-efficient evaporator at its facility in Veghel, the Netherlands.
The evaporator will be used to evaporate water from whey, allowing the lactose to crystallise spontaneously and is expected to become fully operational in October 2013.
With the new technology, the current combination of mechanical and thermal evaporation techniques can be replaced by a single mechanical technique to lower energy consumption by an additional 60%.
The construction and installation of the evaporator is part of a capital expenditure program at Veghel, in which FrieslandCampina is investing more than €60m.
FrieslandCampina DMV, headquartered in the Netherlands, produces milk powders and widely applicable milk proteins. It sells dairy ingredients under DMV, Peption, Esprion, Textrion and Satro brands.
The company operates seven sales offices on three continents: Europe, America and Asia and sells its products in nearly 100 countries.
