The majority of chronic diseases Russian kids contract are caused by toxic toys,a new report has claimed.
A team tested over 500 randomly selected toys bought in shops and markets in towns across Russia,and almost a third were proven to be toxic,reports The Voice of Russia.
Some toys were found to have heavy metal concentration 100,000 times over the allowable limit.
The international POPs Elimination Network reported the findings,in collaboration with Russian chemists and ecologists.
Olga Speranskaya,head of the chemical safety program Eco-Soglasie,said the toxicity of goods tested had no correlation with brand,price,place of purchase or even the country they were manufactured in.
Some of the tested toys also had no European Union certification.
Researchers have warned that exposure to some of the unsafe products could lead to diseases,mental disabilities,sterility and even death.
