The active, smart, and sustainable packaging in BRIC countries valued $3.9bn, $2.9bn, $3.3bn and $27.7bn in 2011 are expected to record a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.80%, 7.14%, 10% and 5.69%, respectively during 2012–16, according to a report by UK-based research firm BRICdata.
The Russian packaging industry is expected to reach a projected value of $4bn, the Brazillian industry to reach $5.9bn, while India and China are projected to reach $5.3bn and $36.5bn, respectively in 2016.
Over 2012-2016, the use of intelligent packaging technologies by pharmaceutical companies is expected to rise although factors including increased demand from the food and beverages, and personal care industries will drive the growth.
Domestic and international companies including Nestlé, PepsiCo, and Coca-Cola recently strengthened their foothold in the Brazilian food and beverage industry leading to an overall increase in demand for packaging.
Vacuum packaging is considered as a key active packaging solution among Russian food and beverage companies.
The packaging eliminates oxygen from packaging, preserves the quality of products, extends their shelf lives and helps companies cater to the growing demand for fresh, high quality products among Russian consumers.
The Indian sustainable packaging category, which is currently recording annual growth of 25%, was valued at $3.19bn in 2011 and the country's overall packaging industry is recording growth of 20% annually, with projections to reach $4.87bn in 2016.
Factors such as high consumer awareness, the increasing popularity of smart and sustainable packaging among leading companies, and the adoption of environment-friendly technology in sustainable packaging production have contributed to the increase in demand for Chinese active, smart and sustainable packaging.
Food and beverage companies, Dole Foods China and Nestle's Buitoni pasta are using modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) technology in the packaging of their products, while Coca-Cola China has adopted sustainable packaging by launching environment-friendly, lightweight bottles and easily recyclable bottles in 2010.
