Kellogg's Has Filed an Application for Obtaining Patent in The US

Kellogg's has filed an application for obtaining patent in the US for its food cup packaging assembly system for better stacking and storage of food products.

The conventional cups used for yogurt, ice cream, juice, and cereal, are found sealed with removable gas impermeable membrane or re-sealable caps.

Such packaging material generally incorporates one or more cups in an enclosure, covering not only the sides but also the tops and bottoms. There may be cases in which either of the top or bottom of the cup is covered. This leads to an unstable surface that comes in way of stacking the product.

Kellogg's has developed a new style of packaging that overcomes these issues.

The company said in its filing with the World Intellectual Property Organization: "A packaging assembly is provided and may include a first cup having a first end, a second end formed on an opposite end of the first cup from the first end, and an interior defined between the first end and the second end that receives food product, whereby the first end has an opening in communication with the interior.

"The packaging assembly may also include a wrap that extends around the first cup and a cap that is selectively attached to the first cup at the first end to close the opening. The cap and the second end may extend through respective apertures formed in the wrap."

As a result, the cups could be put on store shelf or stacked vertically through nesting engagement. There is no limit to the number of cups that can be stacked vertically, resulting in the stability of packaging assembly and flexible storage options in the distribution chain.
