Stora Enso Has Awarded a Contract to Andritz to Supply a New Sludge Dewatering Line

Finnish pulp and paper manufacturer Stora Enso has awarded a contract to Andritz to supply a new sludge dewatering line for thickening and dewatering of fibrous sludges for the company’s Skoghall board mill in Sweden.

Skoghall, which has a capacity to produce up to 750,000t of liquid packaging board annually, is set to commence operations in April 2014.

As part of the order, the international technology group Andritz will supply a gravity table and a sludge screw press to process up to 50t of mixed sludge per day, thus increasing the capacity of the existing sludge dewatering plants.

The sludge comprises a mixture of fibrous and biological sludges, as well as chemical sludges from the mill's chemical thermomechanical (CTMP) line.

The Andritz sludge screw press dewaters the mixed sludge to dryness that can be achieved by mechanical means.

Stora Enso's order also includes the rebuild of an existing Andritz belt press supplied in 1989 to address the new process requirements resulting from the extension of its plant.

The board mill will be able to feed a higher amount of dewatered sludge to the power boiler and operate it with better energy efficiency due to the higher final dryness achieved through the dewatering lines in the future.
