The main Taiwan-based solar cell makers saw capacity utilization rise to 80-100% in the second quarter of 2013 mainly due to strong demand in Japan, according to industry sources.
In Japan, Japan-based Sharp and Kyocera have respective market shares of 30% and 25-28%, China-based makers/vendors have a combined market share of about 20% and Taiwan-based ones and others have 25%, the sources noted. Of PV systems installed or to be installed in Japan currently, 60% are ground-mounted and 40% are roof-mounted, the sources indicated.
China-based vendors are estimated to procure 3GWp of solar cells from Taiwan-based makers for export to the US market, and another 3GWp of solar cells for export to Japan in 2013, the sources said. In addition, Taiwan-based makers are expected to ship 1GWp of solar cells to Europe in 2013, the sources indicated. Thus, Taiwan-based makers will ship 7GWp of solar cells in total in 2013, accounting for 82.35% of the total production capacity of 8.5GWp, the sources noted.
