Manipur Commerce and Industries Minister, Govindas, has said the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, will soon set up a Mega Handloom Park at Imphal, the capital city of the North-Eastern Indian state of Manipur.
The Minister was speaking at the inaugural function of the ongoing 'Ningol Chakkouba Festival Fair 2012'.
Last month, the Additional Commissioner of Handloom and Handicrafts, Government of India, visited Imphal and examined the current developments of handloom and handicrafts in the state, he said.
According to the Minister, the Additional Commissioner was satisfied with the present developments of handloom and handicrafts in Manipur and has said that he will insist the Ministry of Textiles to set up a Mega Handloom Park in the state.
Mr. Govindas informed that Manipur is the third-biggest state in India in handloom sector with 218,000 weavers and 186,000 looms.
He said the Manipur handloom sector can become the biggest in the country if it gets more skilled workers.
