Bangladesh’s leader of opposition Begum Khaleda Zia has urged the country’s readymade garment manufacturers to ensure safety of workers as they are the lifeline of the sector that fetches the largest chunk of foreign exchange for the country.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Bangladesh Apparel and Textile Exposition (Batexpo-2012), the former Prime Minister said it is necessary to ensure better working conditions for workers.
She said the apparel manufacturers, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), banks and other financial institutions, the government and the buyers should all work together to ensure maximum compliance of safety conditions at work places.
Mr. Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, BGMEA president, said the global clothing market is currently estimated to be around US$ 412 billion and it is likely to grow to US$ 650 billion by 2020.
He added that the current share of Bangladesh in global apparel market is mere 4 percent, compared to a huge 37 percent share of China. Hence, there is large scope for the Bangladesh garment sector to develop further.
