Folding cartons, rigid paper boxes and paperboard specialty products manufacturer Colbert Packaging Corporation has installed a new Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106 printing press at its 109,000ft2 Elkhart manufacturing facility.
The press uses both conventional and ultraviolet inks and coatings to print six-color processes and coat paperboard in a single pass.
While the Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106 can run at speeds of up to 18,000 sheets per hour, it also has some additional features that help in increasing production efficiency.
The press is capable of easy load changeovers and continuous feeding because of its logistic feeder package feature.
Colbert Packaging vice president of operations Bill Snyder said: "We wanted to achieve high efficiency, though certainly not at the expense of high quality.
"This new press meets our high standards, and our people are very excited about its capabilities and speed."
It also features built-in quality assurance features like the in-press color control scanner that can automatically scan every 16 sheets and feeds color values to press operators as the job is running.
Its automatic plate hangers also ensure rapid plate hanging and all six printing plates take only 90 seconds to be hung simultaneously.
The company has already started training its people to make them capable of handling the press.
Colbert Packaging president Jim Hamilton said: "This new press will have a major impact on our entire operation. In addition to quality and efficiency improvements resulting from the upgraded technology, the press will also provide additional capacity and expanded capabilities."
