BMW Australia will offer three model grades in the new 4 Series family – 420d, 428i and 435i – directly replacing the grades offered in the old 3 Series Coupe range – 320d, 325i and 335i.

The entry-level 420d’s 135kW/380Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine matches the output of the 320d, but is three-tenths quicker from 0-100km/h at a claimed 7.3 seconds and 13 per cent more fuel efficient at 4.6 litres per 100km on the combined cycle.

The mid-range 428i trades the 325i’s naturally aspirated inline-six for a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Despite the reduction in the cylinder count, the new motor produces an extra 20kW and 100Nm for peak outputs of 180kW and 350Nm. Triple figures come up almost two seconds faster in 5.8sec, while economy improves 23 per cent to 6.4L/100km.

Like the 420d, the range-topping 435i’s turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six matches its predecessor’s 225kW/400Nm outputs, yet wipes three-tenths off its sprint time (now 5.1sec) and 12 per cent off its combined cycle consumption (now 7.4L/100km).

All three engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, upgrading from the previous six-speed auto, and incorporate stop-start and brake energy regeneration technologies, and an efficiency enhancing Eco Pro drive mode.

Prices across the new BMW 4 Series Coupe range largely mirror those of outgoing 3 Series, with the 435i slightly cheaper and the 420d and 428i marginally more expensive than their equivalent 3 Series Coupes, while equipment levels take a step forward.

Standard across the range are bi-xenon headlights, front and rear parking sensors, rear-view camera, and auto-dimming rear-view mirror. Dual-zone climate control, electric sports seats with memory settings, leather upholstery and 60:40 split-fold rear seats expand the spec sheet in the cabin.

The 420d features a six-speaker audio system paired with the Business navigation system and Bluetooth phone connectivity with audio steaming function.

The 428i adds adaptive M suspension, auto-dimming side mirrors, electric lumbar support, a nine-speaker audio system and the Professional navigation system that includes a larger 8.8-inch display, DVD player, internet connectivity and 20GB hard drive for media storage.

The flagship 435i gains variable sports steering and a high-performance fixed-caliper four-pot front brake system, the combination of which BMW promises offers substantially enhanced dynamics and agility.

The 435i’s standard M Sport package brings with it 19-inch M alloy wheels, sports body kit, M leather steering wheel, and a host of other unique trim elements. A 16-speaker Harmon Kardon surround sound system and Comfort Access smart key technology also feature.
