Global manufacturer of plastic packaging Berry Plastics Group has launched a marketing partnership with sustainable consumer goods producer Preserve to create closed loop products using recycled plastic.
The collaboration will focus on improving the awareness of the recyclability of #5 plastic and of Gimme 5 program of Preserve.
According to Berry Plastics, the consumer-powered recycling program, Preserve Gimme 5 provides expanded recycling options for #5 plastics.
Through the program, individuals can take part in #5 plastic recycling by placing their #5 plastic in specified recycling bins at participating retail locations or by mailing to Preserve directly.
The plastic will be later on collected, sorted, cleaned, tested and recycled by Preserve and converted into new products.
Berry Plastics chairman and CEO Jon Rich said through recent years the methods available for recycling polypropylene have increased, with more than 62% of Americans now having access to at least one such alternative.
"Even though recycling venues have increased, at Berry Plastics we believe it is prudent to do our part to encourage recycling and to promote the available recycling avenues," Rich said.
Number 5 plastic, or polypropylene is a commonly used material for items such as yogurt cups, butter tubs, and plastic cold drink cups.
