Here's When Microsoft Will Detail Its New VR Headsets

Microsoft is set to reveal more about its upcoming virtual reality headsets at two separate events in December.

Last week, Microsoft announced that it was working with a bunch of different tech companies to build a shiny new range of VR headsets, but specifics were in short supply. Fortunately, in an interview with Polygon, Microsoft HoloLens boss Alex Kipman said that more details would be revealed before Christmas.

The first of the WinHEC events will take place in Shenzhen, China, running from December 8 to 9. And then Microsoft will head to Taipei City, Taiwan, to reveal more about the headsets on December 14 and 15. Here’s what Microsoft says about the events:

“This December’s events will consist of talks and presentations by Microsoft Windows and Devices executives and experts who will explain in detail our vision and plans. Attendees will gain an understanding of what’s next for Windows 10 and of directional guidance for building PCs optimised for a variety of Windows Holographic HDMs and content.”

Microsoft confirmed it would be partnering with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to create virtual reality headsets that work with Windows 10 PCs to provide a Windows Holographic VR experience. The devices should arrive in March next, around the time of Microsoft’s next major Windows 10 update – the Creators Update. Microsoft promises that the headsets will go on sale from $299, although there’s a chance that some of the HMDs could cost considerably more.

Unfortunately, we still don’t know very much about the headsets’ design, specs, or features, other than that they'll boast "inside-out six-degrees of freedom sensors". At the time, Microsoft's Devices boss Terry Myerson said: "This means there'll be zero need for a separate room, zero need for a complicated setup." Roll on, December.
