The first images and details of the all-electric Volkswagen e-Golf have been revealed ahead of its debut at next month’s Geneva motor show.

First seen on Czech website autoforum, the Volkswagen e-Golf will be powered by a 26.5kWh lithium-ion battery and an 86kW/270Nm electric motor. While the zero-emission hardware will add 250kg to the Mk7 Volkswagen Golf-based EV, there’ll be enough grunt to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 11.8 seconds and push on to an electronically governed top speed of 135km/h.

The battery, to be mounted under the rear seats, should provide a range of around 175km with recharging achievable in about five hours.

Drivers will be able to select between three driving modes – Normal, Eco and Range – with Eco restricting power output to 71kW and maximum velocity to 120km/h, and Range cancelling the e-Golf’s air conditioning system and reducing the top speed even further to 95km/h.

Back in 2010, Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn explained the company’s plans for taking electric mobility into mass production.

“The goal is to become the market leader in E-mobility by the year 2018,” he said.“In the future, the heart of the brand will also beat with electricity.”

Future EV plans from Volkswagen include production versions of the e-Up! and e-Jetta.

The 2013 Geneva motor show kick off on March 5.
