Global packaging company MeadWestvaco (MWV) has introduced a new discreet medication adherence package, Shellpak Renew with Optilock technology.
Designed to address the needs of patient and pharmacist by enabling patient portability and improving pharmacy efficiency, the package features an advanced locking mechanism for the highest level of child resistance (F=1) in a reduced package size.
The small size provides a convenient way for patients to access and carry their medications, while also making dispensing medications quicker and easier for pharmacists.
Outer carton of the package is made of MWV's Natralock paperboard-based packaging solution that increases the use of recyclable materials and reduces waste. The tear-resistant carton does not require paper backing on the foil blister.
The package also contains improved adherence features, including a smooth-slide blister for easy medication access and color-coded spine labels to help differentiate among medications.
Said to be 23% smaller compared to the original Shellpak Renew, the new package still accommodates the same medications.
A calendared blister and space will be displayed on the Shellpak Renew for patient educational information, which is shown to improve patient adherence to medications.
Shellpak Renew with Optilock technology, which is consistent with the MWV Shellpak platform, can be used for multiple medications/SKUs without re-testing for child resistance.
MWV global design vice president Hung Le said the company's design mandate is to develop packaging that is not only child resistant, but also convenient for patients.
"Shellpak Renew with Optilock technology was designed using insights from both our customers and consumers regarding the importance of efficiency and convenience," Le added.
The package will launch at Walmart pharmacies with medications from a generics and specialty pharmaceutical company Mylan, which is working with Walmart to offer 11 SKUs packaged in the new Shellpak Renew with Optilock technology.
